GARRETT BUSHMAN (in the middle in white) battles for yardage. Bushman’s late score lifted VHS to the win over Davis.
KAYSVILLE —Garrett Bushman wanted one more chance.
The Viewmont senior running back had fumbled early in the 4th quarter as his Vikings were driving and Bushman just wanted one more chance at the hosting Davis Darts.
He got his wish.
In a sloppy, wet, cold game that had everything from snow, hail, rain, wind and bone chilling temperatures, Viewmont had just held Davis, and a fumble on the punt gave the Vikings first down in the Darts territory with 5:30 to play.
“I knew we could score,” Bushman said. “I really wanted a shot.” Bushman got his shot after the Vikings moved the ball to the 8 yard line.
“To be honest, the guys on the offensive line came over and told us what they were seeing from Davis and they all felt we could go up the middle on them,” said Viewmont coach Brad Lloyd said. “So we put in the play that went to Garrett.”
Bushman went up the middle, took the ball and steamrolled a defender at the goal line. Kicker Austin Duncan made good on his third PAT of the night, and the Vikings led 24-21. “I felt so bad about that fumble that I just had to make up for it,” Bushman said. “This feels great.”
The game then remained in the hands of the Viewmont defense as the Dart offense took to the field for its last try.
After an offsides moved Davis back to a first and 15, Sam Jenson stopped Tanner Hinds at the line of scrimmage.
A sack by Stephen Tingey forced the Dart into a third and long. That pass was broken up by Dustin Grigg and Logan Edmunds.
Davis’ desperation throw was picked off by Braden Evans.
“This is a big win because it puts us back in the race for the Region championship,” Lloyd said. “We’ve put ourselves back into the thick of things.”
Viewmont’s first drive finished with a 6 yard plunge from Viewmont quarterback Jeremy Lieber.
Davis fumbled on its first possession and the Vikings turned that into another score with a 14 yard run by Austin Cheney. Duncan made good on his PATs and the score was 14-0.
Davis fought back after a Viking fumble and Ben Keaton scored from 4 yards out. Just before halftime, Duncan connected on a 23 yard field goal to give Viewmont a 17-7 halftime lead.
Gavin Fowler scored twice in the second half to give the late lead back to Davis setting up the dramatic finish.
“This was a great team effort win,” said Viewmont lineman Cole Jones. “Davis is a great team and I’m just so proud of the way we prepared. This is about the coaches, the team, no one individual.”
Lloyd said, “We had a great few days of preparation. Each practice and out preparation today was real sharp. The guys did a great job. It was a gut check for sure late in the game. We responded and the guys are believing in what we’re doing.”
