CENTERVILLE — Though residents may start seeing the city’s new blue recycling cans around town beginning Aug. 1, they shouldn’t get impatient if one doesn’t show up at their door right away.

ACE Disposal will begin delivery of residential recycling cans at the start of August, but Centerville staff cautions that it will take about four weeks to get cans delivered to all 3,500 residents who will be expecting one. Though all the cans should be in place by the time the curbside recycling program starts on Sept. 1, city staff asks residents to be patient until everything’s in place.

“They [ACE Disposal] can’t service cans in one area at the same time they’re delivering them in another,” said Centerville Assistant City Manager Blaine Lutz about August’s transitional period. “We’ve been getting calls to the city already, but we haven’t had a good way to distribute the information.”

Lutz also reminds residents who do receive their cans before September to leave them empty until pick-up officially starts. ACE Disposal will also be using the month of August to distribute door tags explaining what materials can and cannot be recycled and what form they should be in. After Sept. 1, pick-up will be on the same day as garbage pickup, but every other week.

As for city officials, they’ll be using August to review the cases of residents who said they weren’t around to opt-out during the city’s official opt-out period (held from April 20 to May 27). The mayor will be going over each letter asking for special dispensation on a case-by-case basis to determine whether or not they’ll be allowed to opt out late.

“He’ll decide whether they have a legitimate reason for not being able to make the deadline, like they were out of the country,” said Lutz. “In each case, it will be up to the mayor to make the final decision.”
