DAVIS COUNTY — The community opened its collective wallet in support of Safe Harbor Domestic Violence Shelter, Tuesday night.
With Evergreen organizers tallying up the total received when the Clipper went to press, a total of at least $100,000 in outpouring was anticipated.
“It was a good night. We’re hoping to break $100,000,” said event chair Carlene Kemp, who has handled those duties for several years.
“I think our community has a lot to do with that,” said Safe Harbor executive director Kay Card, speaking of donations topping $100,000.
There were 23 decorated trees from various groups, along with about 200 gift packages that were sold to the highest bidder during the silent auction.
In the event held at the Davis Conference Center, here, nearly 450 people also paid $50 per person for the fund-raising dinner. The auction and dinner were held Tuesday night, while the public could stroll through and see the trees and buy quilts Monday evening.
“It was not only coming to the dinner and buying things, but it was those businesses and individuals who provided for the silent auction,” Card said.
Among items sold at the auction was a Mexico trip for $2,700 and lasik surgery for $2,000. A couple of trees also went for more than $2,000.
“We’re very happy to feel like we had a success,” especially during hard economic times when many nonprofit agencies are struggling, she said, adding, “In a year where it’s been tight for everybody, we were very encouraged.”
Safe Harbor has seen a record number of mothers and children needing support. In some cases, people have been sent to other shelters and agencies for support because of lack of room at the shelter.
“We have a group of loyal supporters, and we want to thank them,” Card emphasized.
She said new members are being sought to join the Evergreen organizing committee. That group takes a small breather and starts in shortly after the new year to plan the next event.
“Thanks to the Evergreen committee. They do a phenomenal job,” Card said.
Those interested are asked to call the shelter at 801-444-3191. For more information, updates about next year’s event, people can also call and get their name added to a mailing/email list.
“Every year, when I’m really tired, I think I’ll never do it again, but I love doing it,” Kemp said. “It’s just so rewarding.
“People appreciate your efforts, the money makes such a difference, keeps the shelter going. That’s why we do what we do.”
