THE VIEWMONT defense held Layton High to zero points in the second half as the Vikings scored 17 unanswered points to beat the Lancers, 34-17.
LAYTON — The Viewmont Viking football team has been experiencing growing pains over the last few weeks.
Those days may be over for good as the Vikings used a ground game combined with an arial attack to pull away from Layton High Friday night, 34-17.
“I’m real proud of the guys,” said Viewmont coach Brad Lloyd. “They did a great job, especially the way we came out in the second half after being behind at halftime.”
The Vikings opened the scoring on an Austin Cheney three yard run. Austin Duncan’s PAT gave Viewmont a 7-0 lead.
Layton fired back and picked up a 24-yard field goal by Grant Walker.
Viewmont scored again in the first quarter on another three yard plunge from Cheney and Viewmont led 13-3.
Layton grabbed the lead back by scoring two touchdowns before the break.
The rest of the game was owned by Viewmont as Lieber — who had his best game of the year, finishing 8-for-9 with 139 yards and two touchdowns — first teamed up with Sennett Fraughton for a four yard score.
Later, Anthony Tuli showed his speed as he bolted off for an 80-yard score.
Lieber and Brett Blackhurst connected on a 37-yard touchdown pass, and with Duncan making good on all three PATs, the Vikings celebrated its victory.
“We worked hard this week on ball control and cutting down on the turnovers that have caused us so many problems,” Lloyd said.
“These guys came out and did a great job of taking care of the ball.”
Viewmont had no turnovers.
“This is a great team win,” Lloyd said. “We played great as a team. Everyone was part of this win, and I’m just proud as can be.”
