BOUNTIFUL — Joe Johnson is seeking his third term as mayor of Bountiful, having officially registered early Wednesday morning, the first day filings for public office were being accepted.

Among accomplishments of his administration he noted: bringing paramedic service into the fire department, consolidating Bountiful Fire Department with the South Davis Fire Department, replacing the old recreation center with a new regional recreation facility funded by South Davis cities, installing a new natural gas turbine for peak power needs, and more.

Johnson also lists implementing a “Problem-Oriented Police” program (POP) to address critical law enforcement needs, installing concrete streets on major collector roads, including the 1500 South roundabout, and working to keep property taxes and utility rates in the city among the state’s lowest.

“I love Bountiful – it is my home – and have been honored to serve the citizens of this great community for the past eight years as mayor,” he said in a written statement.

“I have had the opportunity to meet with and talk to literally thousands of citizens, ranging from elementary school classes and Cub Scouts to senior citizens at care centers,” Johnson said.

Goals for the next four years include a desire to work to minimize the impact of any “cap and trade” legislation being considered by Congress, making sure the city lives within its means, keeping taxes and utility rates as low as possible, and working to improve the city’s commercial tax base.

Johnson also said he wants to pursue a light rail or streetcar option for South Davis, along with UTA, the county, and South Davis cities.

He also expressed appreciation for working with the city council and staff.

“I hope I have earned the trust of Bountiful’s citizens through my actions as mayor over the past eight years and would like to serve one more term to complete several important projects that I have worked on and made some progress toward accomplishing.”
