SANDY — It’s anticipated about 1,200 people will be hired to staff a Census Bureau call center, starting early next year. The full and part-time positions will be needed for the Sandy call center, which will be one of three across the nation that will be set up as part of the Census which is conducted every 10 years.

A press release from Commerce CRG, which is leasing the building to Vangent, Inc., said the former Discover Card building will be used. Move-in is scheduled to begin in October. The call center will serve as an information resource and hotline for U.S. residents who have questions about how to complete the 2010 Census form and general questions about the Census. In addition, outbound calls will be used to gather information for incomplete forms or to verify data, the press release said.

The decemial census is the largest non-military activity undertaken by the federal government. Data gained is used to apportion the U.S. House of Representatives, and to distribute $300 billion per year in federal funds to local, state and tribal governments.
