BOUNTIFUL — Viewmont spent Friday night beating up Northridge High.

The Vikings used a combination of a battering defense and explosive offense to completely dismantle visiting Northridge, 34-13.

Leading the way for Viewmont was senior Austin Cheney who tore up the Knights to the tune of 174 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns while explosive Dustin Grigg went for two more scores.

Cheney gave the credit for his big numbers to the offensive line.

“It was a real battle up front and our line did a great job of opening the holes and I just ran through them,” Cheney said. “They were great.”

Viewmont came out with Grigg scoring from 20 yards out. Austin Duncan made good on the PAT and the Vikings led 7-0. Cheney’s score from 35 yards pushed the lead to 14-0.

Northridge cut it to 14-7 before Duncan booted a 26 yard field goal to give Viewmont a 17- 7 lead at half-time.

In the final stanza, quarterback Jeremy Leiber and Grigg teamed up for a 93 yard scoring strike.

“I saw the safety coming up to blitz so I knew we’d have one-on-one coverage with Dustin so I threw it and let him do the rest.”

That gave Viewmont a 24-7 lead.

Northridge’s score cut the lead to 24-13. Cheney then went off for a 59 yard score.

“I’m real happy with the way we played tonight,” said Viewmont coach Brad Lloyd. “The offensive line is really coming together and that is huge for us.”

Holding Northridge to just 110 yards of total offense, which Lloyd credited Coach Roger Farnsworth for.

“Coach Farnsworth does a great job with schemes and the guys are doing great jobs out there,” Lloyd said.

The 110 yards included two stands late in the game after Viewmont turnovers.

“We need to seriously cut down those turnovers,” Lloyd said.

As for the defensive response, senior linebacker Brad Payne said, “We’re getting better and faster with each play so by the fourth quarter we’re unstoppable.”

Viewmont travels to Bountiful Friday.
