AUSTIN CHENEY (with ball) has turned into a monster for the Viewmont football team.
OGDEN — Austin Cheney and Dustin Grigg aren’t the biggest Viewmont football players, but the kids may very well be the toughest.
Cheney followed up his great game against Bingham in week one, and Grigg returned from an injury Friday night as Viewmont picked up a thrilling 9-7 win at Weber.
In a game where Cheney finished with 12 tackles, the Vikings came up with a fumble recovery on the six yard line as the Warriors were knocking on Viewmont’s end zone, looking to take back the lead late in the game.
“Austin really is something to watch,” said Viewmont coach Brad Lloyd. “He has the heart of a lion. He never takes a play off. Every play he plays at his fullest and is everywhere taking on anyone no matter how big they are.”
Viewmont opened the scoring when Austin Duncan made good on a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead.
Weber held a 7-3 lead at the half until quarterback Jeremy Leiber connected with Grigg to give the Vikings a 9-7 lead.
The PAT was missed due to a rough snap.
After Cheney and the defense turned away the Weber offense, it was another defensive stop that sealed the game. Weber had the ball on its own 24 yard line needing to move the ball down field in hopes of getting a shot at a field goal.
Senior linebacker Sam Jenson sealed the Viking win when he stepped up and intercepted a pass.
“That was a terrific play by Sam,” Lloyd said. “He did a great job.”
Picking up his first win as the Viewmont coach, Lloyd was able to take a sigh of relief, especially having shaken off the ghosts of Weber games past.
“I’d heard weird things happen up here, so it was nice to get the win,” he said.
“I’m real proud of the guys. Our offensive line did a much better job tonight and Dustin (Grigg) played well coming off his hamstring injury. He gave us a spark.”
Duncan, who is forced to watch most of the game from the sideline as a kicker summed it up best.
“I never worry too much when the game is going on,” Duncan said. “I have confidence in my teammates. They are tough and will do what’s needed for us to be in a position to win.”
