WOODS CROSS — The Woods Cross media guide lists Aaron Markisich as five feet, five inches tall. With no disrespect to the Wildcat defensive back, if he is 5-5, Coach Freddie Fernandes is 7 feet tall.

Either way, the smallest guy on the field played a massive role in the Wildcats’ 27-9 homecoming victory over previously unbeaten Olympus.

Late in the game as the Wildcats started to pull away from the Titans, Markisich picked off a pass and ran it back for a 30-yard touchdown to kick the door shut on the visitors. Then, just for fun, Markisich grabbed another interception and the celebration was on.

“That was fun,” Markisich said. “I’m really around 5-foot 3-inches.”

No matter.

The Wildcats came out of the locker room and took control of the game, driving down on its first drive with quarterback Tyler Parson throwing a scoring strike to workhorse CJ Cory to take a 7-0 lead.

Olympus used a field goal and touchdown to take the lead back 9-7.

Just before halftime, with less than a minute to play, Parson found Mark Evans for a 26-yard score. Michael Clark’s PATs gave WX a 14-9 lead at the break.

On the game, Parson was 8-for-17 for 129 yards.

Behind the play of offensive linemen Mitch Snyder, Jordan O’Toole, Lee Petersen, Chris Lynn and Robert “Tiny” Thompson, Woods Cross then marched all over Olympus, with Corry scoring another touchdown before Markisich put things out of reach.

Parker Rose was huge for the ’Cats, going 114 yards on 13 carries.

“We had a 94-yard drive for a touchdown where we stayed on the ground,” Fernandes said. “Credit to our boys up front. They played a great game and the other guys read and played a smart game.”

“We had seen Olympus, and we knew they were good — so this is a nice win.”

Woods Cross defense kept Olympus standout running back Terry Isaia in check for most of the night.

Snyder spoke for the linemen.

“We just came out here and punched them in the mouth,” Snyder said. “We had a great game plan, and we did it.”

Woods Cross stands 3-1 and will travel up the hill to play Bountiful (4-0) Friday night.

The 19-year drought against Bountiful doesn’t bother this Wildcat team.

“I believe we can win,” Snyder said.
