WOODS CROSS — In a game that will be remembered as the one that got away, the Woods Cross Wildcats let Bonneville off the hook dropping a 31-14 contest in what can only be described as bizarre.
After stopping the Lakers on their opening drive, the Cats took the ball and put together an impressive drive capped off by a perfect scoring strike from Tyler Parson to Mark Evans. The PAT was good and the Cats led 7-0.
Missed opportunities and two broken Bonneville plays gave the visitors two scores and a 12-7 halftime lead.
Woods Cross flew out of the locker room and took control of the game back as Clark took the opening kickoff and bolted 57 yards to the Bonneville 34.
CJ Corry, who played a spectacular game behind a strong effort from the offensive line, pounded the ball three times and eventually found the end zone. Another good PAT put Woods Cross back in front, 14-12 at the 10:38 mark of the third quarter.
After holding Bonneville on its next series capped off by an open field, one-on-one tackle by Mason Fenn, the Lakers were forced to punt.
The punt return for Woods Cross was fumbled on their own 42 yard line and the defense went back to work. Once again the defense held Bonneville and forced the Lakers to punt. The punt return was fumbled into the hands of the Lakers for the second straight time, this time on the eight yard line.
Bonneville took advantage on the back-to back miscues and scored to take an 18-14 lead.
The final two Bonneville scores also came off Woods Cross turnovers.
Another unique side note is Woods Cross lineman Mitch Snyder picked up a pass completion for a total of six yards late in the game when he had the presence of mind to catch a tipped pass and rumble for six yards.
