SALT LAKE CITY— Class B misdemeanor bribery charges were filed last week against former state Rep. Mark Walker, but the case may not be closed yet.

“As far as I’m concerned, this does not necessarily put everything to rest or to bed,” Davis County Attorney Troy Rawlings said Monday morning. “I think it’s far from over.”

In June, Rawlings, a Republican, along with Weber County Attorney Mark DeCaria, a Democrat, were asked by Attorney General Mark Shurtleff to investigate allegations of election law violations against Walker in the Republican primary race for state treasurer.

After months of investigation, the pair turned their findings over to the Salt Lake County Attorney’s Office late last month because the case falls within that county’s jurisdiction. Salt Lake County Prosecutor Sim Gill filed the misdemeanor charge under a part of Utah’s election law that prohibits “inducements not to become a candidate.”

Rawlings wouldn’t comment on where the case may be headed from here, saying since the case is now in Salt Lake County’s hands, he will let Gill make any further comments.

Walker, allegedly offered to let Richard Ellis, his opponent in the state race keep his job with a pay raise.

Walker denied any wrongdoing, saying that he only told state employees they would keep their jobs if he were elected.

But following the June 24 Republican primary, Ellis filed an elections complaint.

In December, Rawlings released a statement saying the completed investigation showed none of the activities in the State Treasurer’s race rose to the felony level.

On Friday Gill filed the misdemeanor charge in Salt Lake City’s Justice Court,

Walker is scheduled for arraignment Jan. 23, when he may strike a plea deal.
