BOUNTIFUL -- Curb-side recycling might just be in the future for Bountiful--that is if some residents have anything to do about it.
Last week, a collection of Bountiful residents met to discuss their plan to approach the Bountiful City Council about the possibility of implementing curb-side recycling.
"The meeting went well," said Raymond Ward who organized the community gathering. "We discussed some of the past attempts that the city of Bountiful has made to implement curb-side recycling, and why they haven't worked out, and what might be done differently next time around to have the program be successfully implemented."
According to Ward, it's been about five years since Bountiful tried curb-side recycling.
"All the city previously did was allow a private company to set up recycling," Ward said. "But they didn't really encourage residents to do it, and that recycling plan didn't last long."
According to Aric Jensen, Bountiful's city planner, in past attempts to implement curb-side recycling, the City just couldn't get enough people to sign up to make ends meet.
And that's just the problem that Ward is trying to solve.
At present, the group is looking to find other Bountiful residents interested in joining their effort to bring recycling to Bountiful.
"We think that there are many others living in Bountiful who also believe that this is an important service for any city to offer that benefits our community and shows respect to the beautiful environment we live in," Ward said. "Our challenge right now is to find the other folks here who feel the same way, so we can make a courteous and well presented case to the City Council."
Ward decided to organize the initial meeting after he discovered that many in his neighborhood, including himself, had a desire and need for curbside recycling.
"After talking with several friends who wondered why every other place they had lived had curbside recycling and Bountiful didn't, I decided we should quit complaining about it and try to do something to change it," Ward said. "I've been down to talk to the folks at city hall myself, but obviously it's going to take a group of people working together to ask the city council to consider providing this service."
"Davis County is really behind in this area. Curb-side recycling is already offered in Logan, Ogden, most of the cities in Salt Lake County, and Provo," Ray continued.
"Most of us have lived in other communities that have provided curbside recycling and have missed it since moving back to Bountiful."
