Police investigate suspicious death
LAYTON -- Police here have what they are calling a suspicious death on their hands.
Police received a 911 call about 8:30 p.m. Thursday from a woman who said that a man at 1616 W. 1875 North was unconscious and not breathing. The call was then disconnected.
When dispatch called back, a man answered and said that the unconscious man was breathing and that they would take him to the hospital. Then the man hung up.
Police and medical personnel went to the residence where they found the house dark and locked. Officers located a family member with a key.
Upon entering, police found the body of a 43-year-old man. They also found a relative asleep in the basement and a woman in a closet who had a warrant out for her arrest.
An autopsy was performed on Friday, but revealed no obvious cause of death could be found. Police are calling the death suspicious.
HAFB offers new sex assault aid
HILL AIR FORCE BASE -- Sexual assault victims, here, have somewhere to turn for help --and do it totally anonymously.
Sexual Assault Response Coordinators is a new Defense Department program. It is geared to helping victims and also preventing such crimes.
"Our senior leadership in the department believes providing care for the victim is priority one," said Capt. Jennifer Cinq-Mars, the base's program coordinator.
Restricted reporting practices are in place to protect victim confidentiality, she said. There were 728 sexual assault cases Air Force Base-wide, and 15 at HAFB.
"Over 80 percent of (sexual assault) victims never come forward," Cinq-Mars said. "There are people out there who we can help."

n Committee OKs
transit funding
The U.S. Senate Appro-priations Committee ap-proved nearly $24 million requested by Utah's Sen. Bob Bennett, including $9 million for design and construction of commuter rail between Ogden and Salt Lake City.
"Commuter rail remains a key component of the mass transit plan to ease traffic congestion along the Wasatch Front," said Bennett, a member of the Transportation, Treasury, Judiciary, Housing and Urban Development subcommittees.
The funding announcement comes on the heels of the announcement of a Letter of No Prejudice for the commuter rail system. The letter allows the Utah Transit Authority to seek lenders for the project and move ahead.
The bill, which also includes funding for low-income housing and economic development projects statewide will be voted on by the full Senate.
