IT TOOK DAVIS basketball players everything to pull away from Jordan Tuesday night. The Darts played after presstime on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the 5A state tournament.
KAYSVILLE — Landon Horne is officially a beast. The Davis High senior proved it Tuesday night as he muscled his way to 14 points and nine rebounds to help lift the Darts past a stubborn Jordan High team, 59-52.
“Landon comes to play every night,” said Davis coach Jay Welk. “He is tough and smart, a great combination.”
Horne showed those smarts as he picked up three assists to go with his points.
The Beetdiggers came into Davis High’s gym, one of the toughest places to play, and led 13-12 after the first period. At half, the Darts still trailed 25-24.
In the third quarter the Region 1 champions slowly began to flex their muscles and took a slim 43-42 into the final quarter.
The final eight minutes had Davis outscoring Jordan 16-10 to pick up the win and move on in the state tournament.
Blake Gardner was another tough Dart as he finished the night with 12 points to go along with two boards and an assist. Tallon Burton proved strong for the Darts as well with eight points, nine rebounds and three assists.
Back court standout, Trevor Webb, contributed nine points of his own.
“At this time of the season the margin of victory isn’t near as important as just getting the win and moving on,” Welk said.
“We were able to do that tonight. Jordan plays a very good game and they gave us everything we wanted. I’m proud of the way our guys responded and the way we fought back to get the win.
“Nothing is easy in the state tournament.”
Davis moved on to play West Jordan at Weber State Wednesday afternoon. See next week’s Clipper for details.
